Don Jose Maria Chacón

My name is Wayne Hutchinson and welcome to one of the most beautiful sites in the world, and we are located in valley of Gasparillo, Santa Cruz

Las Hermanas Estate is named after its sister pikes which rise to height of 2150 ft and it overlooks Maracas Bay in the North, Fort George in the East, Caroni Plains in the South, San Juan and Santa Cruz which is the largest valley in Trinidad.

Las Hermanas Estate comprises of 200 acres of land with just over 100 acres of very old Trinitario and Criollo Cocoa Trees mixed along with Arabica and Robusta Coffee Trees.

Now a little bit of history for you:

Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) was first settled around 1785, when large grants were made to Spanish nationals for cultivating Cocoa and Coffee.

In the 1790's my ancestor Don Jose Maria Chacón was the last Spanish Governor of Trinidad and he made the most significant impression on Trinidad was Don Jose Maria Chacon, after whom the island’s national flower, the Chaconia, has been named. Chacon was an astute administrator who settled many land disputes, declared Port of Spain the new capital and San Jose de Oruna, now St. Joseph would now be replaced, and initiated development in the more remote parts of the island. His regulations concerning the treatment of the slaves were enlightened the colony prospered under his governorship.

He was one of the rare governor who dedicated all his mental and physical energies to the well being of the colonies which he governed. He was a pious Catholic and very tolerant of other’s religions.

Jose Maria Chacon ruled over the colony as a Governor and Commander in Chief, 1784 to 1797, that is, for thirteen years most of which is referred to as the Golden Years of Trinidad.
